A much-loved sign from early Fremont Street, this king once showered neon coins down onto the patrons of the Coin Castle Casino. Opened in 1972, Coin Castle was a smaller but beloved fixture in the vibrant Fremont Street scene, known for its whimsical exterior and affordable gaming options. The neon king, with his jovial face and steady stream of coins, became an iconic image, inviting passersby to step into the world of the casino. Though the Coin Castle is no longer there, it has since been replaced by La Bayou, and later by a new expansion of Golden Gate Casino. Despite these changes, the memory of the neon king continues to shine in the minds of those who remember Fremont’s earlier days.
